Additional notes

Letter dated 12 December 1936 to H. J. J. Sparks from F. Cumbrae-Stewart. Cumbrae-Stewart informs Sparks that he has secured a portrait of Commissioner [John] Bigge for the Oxley Library, who had recommended the establishment of the settlement at Brisbane. The portrait was a photocopy of the original, which Cumbrae-Stewart did not think there was another in Australia. The copy was given to him by Sir Amherst Selby-Bigge, whose great grandfather was a brother of John Bigge.
The letter is on a Leicester Court Hotel (South Kensington) letterhead. Text is handwritten.

Francis William Sutton Cumbrae-Stewart was a founder and trustee of the Oxley Memorial Library (now the John Oxley Library). In 1910 he was appointed foundation registrar and librarian of the new University of Queensland (Information from Harrison Bryan, 'Cumbrae-Stewart, Francis William Sutton (1865–1938)', Australian Dictionary of Biography, National Centre of Biography, Australian National University,, published first in hardcopy 1981, accessed online 27 July 2017).
